Home Workouts: More Effective Than the Gym?

What are the best exercises to lose belly fat and – maybe, just maybe – get a flat stomach or even a six-pack? Well, everybody knows it’s not crunches. Or, at least, not only crunches.


In order to lose belly fat you actually have to burn it from all over your body. Did you ever see a person with a six pack and fat legs? Didn’t think so.


So, if you’re looking for a flat belly, the secret is to work out those abs, while working out the rest of the body too. So, to burn belly fat, you need to do a whole body workout, with particular focus on the abs. It’s not me who says it, it’s all the experts, personal trainers, and other specialists who wrote about the issue at some point.


Here are a few tips I have learned (since I began to lose weight and keep it off for good), they’re really useful and they really work. If they work on me, I don’t see why they wouldn’t work on everyone else:

This is a great tip for everyone who wants to lose weight and to keep it off. Water is essential for weight loss,just have a look here if you’re interested in some scientific facts. Of course, needless to say water is much better than drinking sodas and, drinking more water might help you with some cravings. When you crave something, maybe you’re just thirsty and not actually hungry. I love this saying :) If you want to lose belly fat, eat healthy, nutritious foods, not fried foods or fast food or cakes. Instead of fried chicken, opt for grilled, instead of french fries as a side dish, go for a garden salad. Making the right food choices really affect your belly, inside and out!

You can’t just wish for a flat belly and do nothing about it. I keep seeing these articles on the internet about “how to have a flat belly with no effort” or “how to lose belly fat with no exercise”. They are crap, save yourself some time and don’t bother reading them.

A very common excuse for not working out is not being able to go to the gym. Whether you don’t have the time for it or the money to pay for a gym subscription or maybe you don’t even have one in our area, this excuse is no longer valid nowadays.


I remember, before deciding to lose the weight fore real, how I used to make plans to go to the gym “tomorrow”, or “next Monday” and so on, but the day never came.


So, I decided that, since I won’t go to the gym, I could bring the gym to me.


I got my first piece of “gym equipment” in 2018. It was the "Fitlaya Fitness ab Machine" everyone was talking about. Then, that same year, I got a pair of dumbbells as a gift from my dad (with different sets of weights and everything).


I think it was 2018 when I bought my spin bike and 2019 when I got myself a yoga mat and – wait for it…. – a treadmill.


To be fair, I didn’t spend a fortune on any of this stuff, everything I got was either on sale or already used. Still, in my opinion, it’s a lot of stuff!


So, as you can see, I was planning on losing some serious weight and bought so much equipment which, of course, I never really used.


So, after I literally brought a whole gym into the house, I thought… now what do I do?


As you might have noticed, it took me some years before I realized what losing weight really means. Just having that equipment laying around the house doesn’t make the weight magically disappear.


So, when I decided it’s time, for real, I started to think of ways I can actually use all that sport equipment to my advantage.

If you want a good looking belly to go with your new bikini, you have to work for it!


So, here are a few exercises I do at home. I do these at least 3 times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, no excuses) and I am proud to say the results really show!


1. 25 minutes of spinning

My routine always starts with a nice spin session. I hop my butt on the spin bike, put on an episode of my favorite TV series or, because it’s very motivating, put on an episode of The Biggest Loser on my screen and I start pedaling.


At first, I was literally gasping for air after 1-2 kilometers (around half a mile) but as time passes by, you’ll see how you’ll not even realize where the time flies.


Right now, being in ‘maintenance mode’, I do 20 kilometers on the bike, at a 40 km\h speed (that’s 20 mph).

After I finish the indoor spinning session, I do some weight lifting. Nothing too fancy, some bicep curls, stuff like that.


It helps if you look up some YouTube videos on weight lifting or similar exercises that include weights, I found them useful, learned some things and now I just do my routine while watching TV series (which is a lot better than watching them while eating ice cream!).


3. Abs, glutes, tights

Last but not least, I finish my routine with some abs exercises, like crunches and lifting the legs or stuff like that. It helps if you look up some videos on youtube here as well, for aerobic exercises or toning abs and choose from there.


Lunges and squats are a must, of course. Sometimes, if my heart rate goes too low, I even jump rope or do jumping jacks for 1 minute to keep the heart rate up.

This is a 10 minute video with 10 exercises, done twice, in sets of 30 seconds. It’s pretty hard to do them at first, but if you’re looking for a quick workout and have no time or no money to go to the gym, these exercises are perfect!

This is a great 20 minute workout, not too difficult, perfect for beginners and for who has at least 30 free minutes a day (I assure you you’re gonna need 10 extra minutes to take a shower afterwards


That’s about it.


I do this routine a few times a week. Sometimes I do other exercises as well, such as 30 minutes of Tae Bo or some other workout I found on YouTube (seriously, this YouTube is amazing!).


It’s free, I’m in my own home so I can squeeze it in whenever I have some free time and it really helps me stay fit.
