How To Build Your Own Workout Routine : A Guide for Beginners

How do you create a good workout plan? I'm sure that you might have taken a look at various magazines, websites and books and followed the plans that were suggested, but they end up failing! Why is that so?

Failing to plan is planning to fail.

However, workout plans are not one size fits all. There are various things you need to take into consideration, to ensure that the routine you have created will help you stay motivated, and ultimately, help you achieve your aim.

Take a look at some great workout plans!

Important Aspects To Make A Good Workout Plan

Creating successful workout plans will require you to take into consideration certain things. So let's take a look at each one of those factors:

They are:

- Time

- Goals

- Balance

- Variety

-

1- Time

If you aim to achieve six packs in 3 months, but you are only willing to spare 20 minutes to exercise per day, that is not very realistic. You need to consider how much time you have to exercise and stick to it.

Very often, people tend to convince themselves that they really can afford to spare an hour to exercise every day, when they barely have time for household chores. Do not lie to yourself. It does not help you achieve your aims at all.

You might have very little time to devote to exercise. Don't think that you will be disadvantaged. You aren't.

Let's take a look at Lady X. She is a powerful corporate figure. Besides rushing for meetings and having power lunches, she might only have 10 minutes for herself every hour.

But if she makes a conscientious effort to do some quality workouts during that 10 minutes, she would have accumulated an hour of exercise in that day!

Never underestimate the power of breaking down your workouts. You do not need to have one solid uninterrupted hour for exercise. Break it down to what is doable! It will build up and reward you in time.

2- Goals

Deciding what you want to achieve is extremely important in preparing a good workout plan. How is this so?

If you decide that weight loss is your goal, you will need to ensure that you have more aerobic workouts in your exercise regime. This does not mean that you neglect muscle strengthening exercises.

Want to improve your stamina? Then you need to focus on activities like fartleks, intervals and circuit trainings.

What if you choose to build muscles? Then it is quite easy, ensure that you spend slightly more time on muscle building exercises.

Remember, you do NOT neglect other exercises in favour of the one that you should focus on. This means that if you want to build your stamina, do not do fartleks and intervals, and turn a blind eye to muscle building exercises. This brings me to my next point...

3- Balance

I don't know what you might have seen or read, but you do not overwork yourself from one type of exercise alone. Don't run like hamsters on a rodent exercise wheel and fail to spend some time on your midsection.

Your body needs to be trained equally. The muscles need to be trained. Your heart and lungs (cardiovascular systems) needs to work from aerobic exercises.

Avoid advice that suggests otherwise. You won't go far in improving your health and fitness if you don't have a balance. Do not worry, I will teach you everything you need to know in crafting a good workout plan.

4- Variety

Yes, you want to build muscles. You have been doing lunges for so long that you sleep lunge!

Okay, maybe not THAT extreme. But you get what I'm trying to say, don't you?

My point is, do not stick to the same workout over and over again. Rotate them around as and when you feel like it. Instead of always doing bicycle crunches for your abdominals, why not try planks instead?

This might seem like a minor point, but it is possibly one of the most crucial. Most other workout plans fail to highlight the importance of variety and that is why you get discourage and stop exercising altogether. Don't fall into the same trap!

Staying motivated is extremely important and having variety is one of the key ingredients in ensuring that you have made a good workout plan.

5- Consistency

All your factors would fall flat if you did not have consistency. Therefore, please ensure that your goals are realistic, that you set aside a reasonable (but not an overwhelming) amount of time to exercise.

This is important as expecting too much from yourself in a short period of time will cause you to feel overwhelmed and therefore stop being consistent. Take fitness as a journey and make slow and steady progress.

Once you understand that, you will be much more motivated to continuously work out and strive for success with a good workout plan which you have created!

Final Words

You now understand that a good workout plan is not something that you get off a magazine or a book. You need to plan it for yourself, and that comes from considering how much time you have, what are your goals, having a balance and ensuring variety.

Only when you keep in mind of such things, you can make use of what you know about working out, or what you have learnt from this site in creating your own personalized routine. Trust me, there is nothing better than following something that you created.
