Diet and Weight Loss: Best and Worst Salads for Your Health

There is a common misconception that, whenever you chose to eat a salad, it must be healthy. Because it’s a salad.


However, that’s not the case. What is a salad anyway? A salad, according to the dictionary, is “a cold dish of various mixtures of raw or cooked vegetables, usually seasoned with oil, vinegar, or other dressing and sometimes accompanied by meat, fish, or other ingredients“


Unfortunately, while the various mixtures of vegetables are a great idea for a nice meal or side dish, the oil, vinegar or other dressing options are not.


It’s easy to get confused, especially when you’re out in a restaurant and don’t know what to order. When you see the word ‘salad’ pop out in front of your eyes, you probably think… hmm.. salad… that’s a good option.


Well, here are some examples of salads that are so full of calories, fat, cholesterol and so on, you’ll probably want to avoid in the future:


1. Caesar salad

A chicken Caesar Salad, dinner size, can have up to 900 calories and 60 gr. of fat! Normally, a Caesar Salad has romaine lettuce, olive oil, fresh crushed garlic – often in olive oil, salt and pepper, wine vinegar and lemon juice or lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, raw or coddled egg yolks, freshly grated Parmesan cheese and freshly prepared croutons (wiki). Well, not all restaurants use the same recipe, and if you add the famous Caesar Dressing on top, you’ll have a bomb of calories on your plate.

This is probably the worst of all salads: grated cheese, grated carrot and a mayonnaise dressing. The only healthy ingredient is the carrot, but since it’s covered in mayo, forget about it! So that’s a big no,no.


3. Egg salad

Eggs are good, they are a source of protein and good cholesterol, but not when they’re mixed with mayonnaise! So, if you’re craving a sandwich while eating out, just avoid the egg salad. Especially if you’re trying to lose weight!


4. Macaroni salad

The macaroni salad is basically boiled pasta with mayonnaise. It’s one of the worst foods you can eat while losing weight. Not only it’s full of fat because of the mayo, but it’s usually served as a side dish for god knows what, like fried chicken or barbecue. Do yourself a favor and avoid the macaroni salad.


5. Russian salad

This is one of the main dishes many serve for special occasions, at lest where I come from they do. Is it Christmas? We’ll make Russian salad! Is it Easter? Russian salad it is! Or birthdays or friends coming over, you name it. Those days are over for me though, all that fat and bad cholesterol from all that mayonnaise is just not worth it!


Well, these are just 5 examples of unhealthy salads. They’re called salads because they’re a mixture of ingredients topped with some sort of dressing, but they’re really not healthy at all.


If you’re trying to lose weight, avoid them as best as you can. Choose a garden salad instead, whether you make your own or choose it as a aide dish at your favorite restaurant.


Also, never choose a salad with the salad dressing on it. Always ask for the dressing on the side, or better yet, skip the dressing altogether! Ranch dressing,  Thousand Island dressing or anything that contains mayo in it also contain hundreds of useless calories. If you really want to add some flavor to your salad, simply add a spoon of olive oil, a spoon of lemon juice and some salt and pepper. Easy, healthy and a much better choice for weight loss!
