Every woman has a unique body with its own peculiarities. So, normal menstrual cycle is a rather vague conception. Thus, an average menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days with menstrual bleedings from 3 to 5 days. However, for some women it is normal to have bleeding for 7 days. Moreover, some women may have much heavier menstruations than others. Keeping in mind all the above said, there is no point in compering your cycle with that of others. It is much more important to monitor any possible changes in your periods, especially changes in the duration and frequency.
So, what are those menstruation problems that should never be ignored? Here are some of the most serious ones.
1- Absence of periods
Such condition is called amenorrhea and the first thing that should come to one’s mind is whether it can be related to a woman’s age. In sexually active women aged 20-40 the absence of menstruation might be the first sign of pregnancy, whereas in elder women it can tell about the onset of menopause. However, other causes of amenorrhea include:
- Severe stress.
- Obesity.
- Anorexia.
- Thyroid problems.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome.
- Diseases of the uterus.
- Ovarian dysfunction.
- Oral contraceptives.
2- Too painful menstruations
Menstruation anyway is the most uncomfortable period of the month. Some women might experience only slight discomfort, whereas others will not be able to get out of bed. Painful periods are called dysmenorrhea and they are usually accompanied by menstrual cramps, backache, headaches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The most common causes of dysmenorrhea are endometriosis and uterine fibroids – they might require surgical intervention.
3- Blood spotting between periods
This problem must not be ignored since there are too many causes for that – from the irritation of the mucous membrane in the vagina, cyst or infection to ectopic pregnancy or even cancer.
You should definitely see your doctor if:
- You have irregular periods.
- Your menstrual bleeding lasts for more than 7 days.
- You experience uncontrollable bleeding so you have to change your tampon every hour or two.
- You have menstrual bleeding less often than every 35 days or more often than every 21 days, for at least several cycles.
