1. Best places to see alligators around Miami
If you’ve ever watched Animal Cops Miami, then you already know the worst places to see alligators in Miami. How about in your swimming pool? Your backyard when your dog’s gone missing? In your sewer pipe? Under your car? The list goes on, but to Miami residents, alligators are a fact of life. Reptile remnants of pre-historic days, they’ve figured out the survival formula to success.
But life hasn’t always been easy for the floating log creatures. Once hunted almost to extinction, The American Alligator (Alligator mississipiensis) is the official Florida state reptile. It’s made a tremendous rebound and since 1985, alligators have been commercially farmed. If you’d like to visit some alligators on your trip to Miami, here are some popular places to do so.
- Everglades Alligator Farm
THE EVERGLADES ALLIGATOR FARM is one of the top tourists draws in Dade County. Home to over 2000 alligators from babies to really big ones, the farm is a great place to witness the life cycle of alligators from eggs to maturity. A trip to the Alligator farm includes a walk an airboat tour of the Everglades and a walking tour of the property that includes visits to the breeding ponds. It takes six years for an alligator to start breeding so providing natural, safe areas for them is essential.
There are also exotic snakes and other wildlife, many of which are featured at the daily wildlife show. Of course, the highlight is the alligator feeding at noon and 3pm – watch your toes!
- Everglades Safari Park
EVERGLADES SAFARI PARK is another great place to see and appreciate alligators. Their main attraction is the Eco-Adventure Tour which includes a 30-40 minute airboat ride, an alligator wildlife nature show, and a walk on the jungle trail with its many observation platforms and exhibits. The Safari tour boats are capable of accommodating all sorts of groups and are accompanied by a wildlife guide who will tell you the history of the area and its inhabitants as you glide just above the River of Grass.
Not only alligators live in this swampy area, but crocodiles, birds, and other wildlife as well. Tours depart every 30 minutes. Prices are $23 for adults $10 for children 5-11, and free for under 5. Everglades Safari Park is on US 41 (Tamiami Trail) 15 miles west of the Florida Turnpike.
2. Best places to fish Miami
Well, it really depends on the species you are targeting. For example, if you are interested in catching swordfish (a member of the billfish family) then you would have to travel to tropical/warm water areas (though they can also be caught in colder climates) hire a captain and go night fishing for them. Swordfishing is especially good off the florida coast (around the keys up to Miami) in the winter.
If however, you were interested in catching a largemouth bass then your best bet would be in lakes and rivers in the united states of America or Canada though some have been introduced into the river Ebro system in Spain along with several other lakes and river systems in some of the warmer European areas though they do not reach the same sizes at there American counter parts.
This question is very broad you need to be more specific, but generally, if you are fishing for a predatory fish i.e. a large mouth bass or pike then areas that contain shelter and places that ambushes could be set up from e.g. reeds, any type of human structure piers, boat ramps, bridges, gulleys and drop-offs are all good places to start. A good idea is ask at your local tackle shop and they will provide you with lots of information.
